Can You Kick It? Yes You Can!
Kick it with Vans
As far as musical collaborations go we're either subjected to a musicians attempt at bridging the fashion gap (Best case Yeezy, Worst case G-Unit...) or a homage to a musicians catalogue and aesthetic. This year we've already been gracious enough to ride the lightning with Metallica on their 3rd collaboration with Vans, now the Anaheim-based company has put together one of their biggest in volume collaborations to date, linking up with Hip/Hop legends A Tribe Called Quest on a number of silhouettes honouring their legacy.
Style and Mix Equals Design
It's a royal mix of two outfits that champion Style, Art, Music and Authenticity throughout their storied histories. Across their 6 studio records, Tribe championed an abstract, conscious and uplifting vibe to their group through all facets of their artistry. Holding a strong affinity for Afrocentrism in their aesthetic, the collab retains a distinct Afropunk feel through the aesthetic.
The Vans in 4 Different Designs
Presented are 4 different silhouettes, The Vans Old Skool, Era, Authentic and Slide-On respectively, presenting different influences throughout the 4. The Old Skool and Slide-On both champion the aesthetic of Tribe's legendary second release The Low End Theory, using the iconic Red and Green UV paint to deck the lateral sides of the Old Skool, and the top of the foot strap of the Slide-On. Adding further details to the Old Skool, the lateral detailing is joined by bright lettering to the laces displaying the titles to all 6 of their albums, as well as the ATCQ logo on the tongue and the footbed.
The Authentic hosts a tribute to late MC Phife Dawg, a founding member of Tribe alongside Q-Tip, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Jarobi White, with an all-over print based around the life of the legend. An allover print of writing is combined with phat laces to create a loud tribute.
The Era serves as an ultimate tribute to the extensive back catalogue from the group. Taking all of the album covers and placing them across the cream upper in an all-over print pattern, offering a statement of knowledge for the wearer.
