Two years into Nike's reign they signed their first endorsed track athlete Steve Prefontaine. He was an amazing talent who had charisma and was exciting for everyone to watch. This shoe pays homage to Steve's beginnings at Marshfield High School where the Olympic marathon athlete spent many years, the Skull & Crossbones is a reference to their college team 'The Pirates'.
There have been previous Air Max 1 releases that celebrated this athlete’s achievements, but the two styles took a different approach to the monochrome style we see today with Green & Purple dominating the upper that featured a Rip-Stop material.
The Air Max 1's that are releasing this time around are made from the finest materials, with a rich leather brandishing the paneling on the flanks whilst a soft Nubuck constructs the rest of the upper, the suede has a Jet Black appearance that creates a truly sleek effect especially when matched with the debossed branding on the heel. Thankfully Nike opted for an Off White midsole which provides a crisp and subtle retro break in the middle and makes them a much more wearable option. The Standout detail is the Skull & Crossbones applique which adorns the tongue and is the creme de la creme of the 1 matched with the Metallic Silver eyelets, which will make these a highly sought after piece.
There is also an Air Max 95 that is releasing to coincide with the 1, the 95 has a little extra detailing to them as the Black colour scheme has been broken by a Metallic Silver section that covers the heel and Nike branding, these also feature the Skull & Crossbones detail on the tongue.
I prefer the materials that have been used for the Air Max 1 but that is just personal preference. Both silhouettes are a stand out choice it just depends on what style you like more, what are you leaning towards?
