Looking at the image, can you imagine what the NIKE logo would feel like to touch?
This week I want to talk about the importance of directional light in sneaker photography. Most of the time I'll seek out soft, diffused lighting that wraps around products, bathing them in a light that banishes harsh shadows. The direction in which that light falls onto the product plays a big part in its appearance.
In the example of the retro-styled Tech Challenge IV above, I wanted to emphasise the embossed NIKE logo punched into the flank of the sneaker. I was able to achieve this by finding a location where the light would fall onto the product from above. The directional light creates highlights and shadows that add depth to the product.
