tymtym Patternpaint
We'd like to give a massive welcome to the Custom Kicks Series to tymtym!
First things first....watch this fantastic time lapse video of Shoddy working his custom magic.
What’s the name of the project?
I like to call the style ‘patternpaint’, because I paint a similar pattern on other items. The individual pairs of sneakers doesn’t necessarily have a name except for these are ‘the Gravis for Dale’. But each pair of sneakers I work on usually forms part of a larger ongoing project or series. I have recently finished a series of items, including a pair of adidas sneakers, a vinyl toy and a skateboard. Another series, again has sneakers, but is accompanied by some mini canvasses
How many hours did the painting take?
A pair of sneakers should take almost as long in preparation as it does in painting. A patterned pair like these could conservatively take 16 hours to complete. I made a time-lapse video of me painting this pair so you can see in detail the process involved in painting the pattern.
Is this a design you’ve been perfecting?
Sneakers are one of my favourite media to work with, but the main body of my work is on a more traditional format – paper. And this ‘patternpaint’ style was developed on paint and canvas before being transferred to trainers.
The idea for the pattern came from numerous different sources, but I’m a conscious doodler and some of doodles take on a cartoon like appearance, I even have a character that appears in my work. Other doodles have been inspired by patterns I have seen in nature or mathematical creations. The ‘patternpaint’ style is a kind of painted cartoon pattern doodle.
Some sneakers I have worked on before have a more illustrative style of trainer design, however recently my other art work and my sneaker designs have become unified. So yeah, you could say I have been perfecting the style for a while but it goes beyond trainers…
Do you apply the pattern to anything else?
… I can, and do apply this pattern to anything that will take the paint. I can see the ‘patternpaint’ style taking over the world, but my short term goals are a bathroom wall, and some antlers.
What’s your favourite sneaker brand at the moment?
Clae’s. I love their versatility; they’re both shoes and trainers, as you can wear them to work or social events. Not only that, but they come in great colours, and are especially agreeable to paint on.
I’m a fan of mid century Scandinavian designed chairs. My favourite design is Finn Juhl’s Chieftan chair, not that I can afford one just yet. I think its interesting that lots of Scandinavian architects also designed some of the most enduring furniture designs, which are simple, beautiful and yet functional.
Good Man, we love the mid century modern furniture as well. We've got a Stouby and Illum Wikkeslo sofa's in the office......they're not very comfortable but they look great!
