  • Nike Trainers
Lets bust out some history and fact about the most famous sportswear brand on the planet - Nike! The apparel side of Nike is obviously an important side of their business, but this is for the sneakerheads of this world, so we're just going to concentrate on Nike Trainers Nike's seed was planted in Oregon by Phil Knight and his college athletics coach Bill Bowerman. In 1962 they travelled over to Japan to speak to Onitsuka Tiger. They wanted to strike a deal where by they could import the mens trainers to the U.S.A. Onitsuka Tiger were surprised by what these to guy's wanted to do and immediately put them on the spot and bombarded them with question's. Bill & Phil had to think in the spot and said they represented a Blue Ribbon Sports and somehow managed to bluff their way through the rest of the meeting. - the first 200 pairs of mens trainers soon arrived on U.S. shores. In the early days Onitsuka Tiger were making technical running shoes, but these models are still being worn today and we just know them as trainers or sneakers. Technology has moved on massively. In 1963 Bill & Phil and their company Blue Ribbon Sports were developing a great reputation with college athletes and they were selling stacks of these trainers. Before too long Bill was dreaming about how to improve the Onitsuka Tiger shoes and Phil was dreaming about greater profitability and this lead them to probably the biggest decision in sportswear history - to produce & sell their own running shoes. Nike Trainers were now a deep in their thoughts, but not yet a reality. In 1971 the Nike brand was born. Jeff Johnson a company employee thought up the name - Nike. Nike was the greek goddess of victory. Caroline Davidson designed the Swoosh and the brand had been created. In 1974 the Bill created the waffle outsole, the concept was quite random, but it's all in the name. Bill poured a rubber compound into his kitchen waffle maker and thats how it was done. Within 10 years the world was wearing Nike trainers and sports stars were endorsing the brand. John McEnroe, Henry Reno and Michael Jordan were all signed to the brand and were winning on the courts wearing Nike Trainers . In 1987 the first Nike Airmax was in the shops and it was the first of the mens trainers to feature the visible 'AIR' unit. The main designer on the project was Tinker Hatfield and he was inspired by the construction of the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
  • adidas trainer
adidas trainers - need we say more! We're not going to bore you with the full adidas story as it's probably the most well known in sportswear and business history....but in summery; The Dassler brothers, Adolph and Rudolf who each went on to found their separate companies, produced their first pair of training shoes in Herzogenaurach, Germany in 1920. Dassler shoes rapidly grew a fantastic reputation for athletic excellence - Jesse Owens won his 4 gold medals at the 1936 Olympic Games wearing Dassler shoes but following a massive bust-up the 2 brothers went their separate ways in 1948 Adolph set up adidas and the famous adidas trainers brand was born and Rudolph set up Puma and Puma trainers were created. Adi is short of Adolph therefore adi-dassler became compressed into the brand name adidas. by the way, the 'a' for adidas is deliberate. The correct spelling of adidas is always with a lower case 'a' In 1948 the '3 stripe' logo was created and it wasn't until 1972 when the 'trefoil' logo was introduced. adidas trainers featured heavily at the Munich Olympics in 1972 and before long Muhammad Ali and the German Football were also wearing adidas trainers. Their sportswear domination continued after adi's death in 1972 and more sporting superstar's we're pulling on the now famous 3 striped adidas trainers like David Beckham, Zinedine Zidane & Lionel Messi. The technical sports products are just one side of brand, as the urban consumer has been embracing the adidas trainers for more than 30 years. Most famously Run DMC wore and rapped about adidas Superstar's and in the 1980's football fans in England were following a terrace fashion culture called the 80's casual. They all wore the latest sports wear from adidas and various other European sportswear brands. adidas trainers were here to stay and generation upon generation will go on to love the style of trainers they produce.

  • ASICS Gel Lyte III
ASICS did in fact start out as Onitsuka Tiger back in 1949 but as technology developed and the need for technical running shoes grew ASICS was created due to a amalgamation of GTO, Jelenk and Onitsuka Tiger and in 1977 ASICS for formed. The ASICS Gel Lyte III first debuted from the ASICS stable in the early 1990's and was the trainer of choice for the high mileage runner. It's split tongue design was once included for fit and functionality and has now become a timeless piece of design. The ASICS GEL Lyte III was one of the first silhouettes to include the now famous ASICS GEL cushioning technology that revolutionised the protection given to runners. A triple density compression moulded midsole and a speed lacing system really made this the trainer of choice for the serious runner. In the modern era the GEL Lyte III has become the canvas of choice for many directional collaborations and has now built a reputation for itself as the favourite model of the true sneaker aficionado.

Now for some technical ASICS Gel facts - ASICS Gel effectively disperses vertical energy into a horizontal plane and the dual gel pads protect against impact injuries. Biomechanical test indicate that the ASIC Gel shoes are 21% more stable than the top-of-the-line "Air" shoes.
